As Thomas A. Edison said ‘What you are, will show in what you do’. Behind any effort for achieving a goal there are human beings, who are affected by a system consisting of certain needs, feelings, values and beliefs. Therefore, every one of us acts in a unique way towards achieving his or her goals and dreams. When our system is aligned with the goal, and the actions taken to achieve it, then our mind works in favor of the effort for the goal’s achievement, while when we go against our system, then our mind acts as saboteur to it.
This is why it is vital to become aware of the most important information needed, before setting and start working on a business goal, or on any goal, and that information is to know who we really are! We all have the same needs. According to Tony Robbins, the Peak Performance Strategist, human needs are grouped in the following six categories:
All of these needs exist within us, but what makes the difference is how we place each one of them in our hierarchy. How important is for us to feel safe or significant? And how willing are we to take risks, in order to satisfy our need for variety? Also, each one of us, has his or her personal story and life’s experiences that have influenced our beliefs and have shaped our values. Therefore, it is important to understand that in order to serve a goal we’ve set, and serve it in an awesome way, we have to see this goal as part of who we are. And if we want to have lasting results, we need to see this goal as a mission important for us to achieve, because it represents the way we perceive the world, and the way we feel and behave. We have to find a purpose in it, which means a lot to us, in order to have the strength to go on, when the hard times come in our way, and to feel the excitement, whenever we achieve successfully an action step.
On the other hand, setting a goal that is based on what seems important to the society we live in and being affected by our social circles, neglecting to connect with what we really want and who we really are, won’t bring the desired outcome for success, as, subconsciously, we try to go against our will and our vision of what success and happiness means to us. Has ever happened to you to already being on the way of a goal’s achievement and suddenly you stop for a moment and you ask yourself: “Why am really doing this? What is the point?” Thus, it is important to listen to our inner self and find the perfect match between the goal we’ve set and our system of needs, beliefs, values and feelings. For example, if we want to start up our own business, and to keep the flame burning, throughout the way, we should check how our goal will serve our system. If for us it is important to feel significant, we need to find the way we will make a difference to the world with our products or services. If we lead a group of people, and we give high importance to the need of contribution, we can satisfy this need by helping our people grow and give them space to express themselves and their creativity. If honesty is a strong driver in our life, the ways we choose to follow in order to reach our goal, should go hand in hand with this value, as using methods, not accepted by our inner self, will cause a conflict between our goal’s achievement and what we represent as human beings.
Thus, the point of this article is to emphasize the significance of knowing who you are as a success factor for your goal. Believe me, you can achieve anything you want, as long as you understand why it is so important for you to achieve it. No matter what kind of goal you want to succeed in, if this goal is part of who you are, and you make sure you keep this connection live in your mind, you will make it happen. Because, not making the decision to take action towards achieving your dream and goal will always make you feel unsatisfied and that there’s something missing from your life. This feeling will keep you constantly on the move, searching for this something that will be able to satisfy your inner needs. On the contrary, trying to achieve a goal that it doesn’t represent who you are, or that you haven’t find a link to connect it with your system of needs, values and beliefs, will keep you demotivated and the chances of success are not with your side.
So if you want to live a successful life, set the right goal for you, know why this is important and go with all your heart and commitment to get it!
